My 2nd casting of aluminium cans and scrap into some foam skulls bought off ebay. Lost foam casting is really easy and can be as simple as a stainless steel can with a fire underneath it. Melting Aluminium cans at home has never been easier, this setup took a few hours to make, just some charcoal and instead of a compressor you can use a hairdryer,
Failure on both casts, air bubble on the first pour and a partial on the second meant it didnt cast properly. I shouldnt have used a spout and just cast direct into the top of the polysterene.
The diy casting sand should have had bentonite in it as a binder, also some wood ash as well to make it smoother, so I read, its so frigging expensive to buy. You can actually see individual grits of sand in the aluminium skull....it adds character he says.....
Upgrade to the gas bottle foundry, a second propane bottle inserted with a layer of packed sand as an insulator. The top has had a 5 inch pipe inserted plus a grid, this will be filled with a heat resistant filler once i get some more materials to hand.
