DIY: Build a Nichrome Wire electric aluminum melting furnace w/ fire brick

This is the first video in our series of DIY videos that feature resistance wire! See our step-by-step instructions on how to build an electric aluminum melting furnace for your backyard foundry. The furnace is made of K23 fire brick with Nichrome wire as the heating element.

Materials for Furnace:

K23 Fire Brick -- 10 blocks (9" x 4.5" x 2.5") ~ $4.50 per block
Nichrome or Kanthal wire -- 70 ft. of 18 AWG wire, ~$15 to $20
Scrap steel, iron, or other material to make a frame.
A few nuts & bolts for connecting the power source to the heating element.


Rasp file
Lathe w/ round stock -- This is for winding the heating element. You can always use a drill or wind it by hand instead.
