https://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/2 … 6-00035117

The Jan. 6 select committee has heard testimony indicating that then-President Donald Trump — after rioters who swarmed the Capitol began chanting “hang Mike Pence” — expressed support for hanging his vice president, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The White House chief of staff at the time, Mark Meadows, was in the dining room off the Oval Office with Trump at one point during last year’s Capitol attack, the committee has been told. Meadows then left the dining room and informed other people nearby that Trump had signaled a positive view of the prospect of hanging the vice president, the panel heard.

Yeah, on that alone, Trump should be put in prison.

The thing I haven't seen anyone talk about in an article (maybe it's been there, but I haven't seen it) is what all this exposes about the absolutely failed aspect of our legal system, in terms of swift jutice, both at the civil and criminal levels.  A key to Trump's success as a person in our society is his knowledge of how to game the legal system to delay forever, and, thus, win.

It has also been said numerous times what in the world is Merrick Garland doing, why the wait. Oh it's because the DOJ is making sure that all the i's are dotted and all the t's are crossed but it's sure taking time to get this idiot and cohorts indited, found guilty and jailed. I think Georgia might finally nail him.

The Epidemic of Mass Shootings Is Neither Inevitable Nor Unsolvable
We can start by rejecting the big politicized myths that stand in our way.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 … gs-uvalde/

For many years now, every horrific gun massacre has ricocheted widely with a familiar theme of outrage and surrender. On Wednesday, the day after a heavily armed, suicidal 18-year-old slaughtered 19 children and two adults at a Texas elementary school, Washington Post columnist Brian Broome published one of the more powerful versions of that narrative I’ve ever read. “Nothing happened after innocent children were slaughtered the last time, or the time before that, and nothing is going to be done now,” he wrote, citing Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook and Parkland.
Broome’s column articulated the enduring shame of our nation’s political stalemate and pathetic inaction on gun policy. It was piercing and poignant—and, in my view, wrong.

After Texas Massacre, Politicians Move to Introduce Gun Control Legislation…in Canada

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 … gislation/

Citing worsening homicide rates and the cautionary tale “south of the border,” the Canadian government yesterday introduced a massive bill designed to reduce the presence of deadly weapons.
Yesterday’s legislation would freeze the sale of handguns, initiate a mandatory buyback of most military-style assault rifles, and implement so-called “red flag” laws that allow judges to temporarily confiscate weapons from people viewed to be suicidal or dangerous to others. The bill, which will likely garner the support of both the Canadian Liberal and New Democratic Parties, is all but guaranteed to pass despite objections from conservatives.

The government also announced that it will require all rifle magazines to be altered to fit a maximum of five rounds and that it will ban the sale of large-capacity magazines.

“As a government, as a society, we have a responsibility to act to prevent more tragedies,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said yesterday. “We need only look south of the border to know that if we do not take action, firmly and rapidly, it gets worse and worse and more difficult to counter,” he added.

While Trump’s phone call launched the Georgia probe into election interference, the investigation has now been expanded into include possible racketeering and fraud linked to a number of efforts by Republicans to upend the election.
A key focus will be the slate of fake electors Republicans created, aiming to substitute them for the state’s legitimate electors. Trump’s former personal attorney Rudy Giuliani was deeply involved in that scheme.

Right-Wing Organization Launches Chilling Map Marking Schools As 'Woke Hot Spots'
Liberty Alliance, a far-right Missouri organization, named specific schools and school districts on its map.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/missouri … a85dc23c44

A far-right Missouri organization has launched a disturbing map alerting followers to “hot spots” of so-called “woke” activity in the state.
As of Monday, the 12 map locations all concerned educational institutions, and linked to articles, videos and tweets trashing things like critical race theory and diversity training. The information named at least 12 specific schools or school districts — particularly chilling in light of America’s mounting toll of school mass shootings.
The Liberty Alliance is “committed to fighting back against the woke agenda permeating all across Missouri,” reads a statement on the conservative group’s website next to a state map peppered with spots.

“The first step in fighting back is uncovering their crazy ideas — from Critical Race Theory to grooming toddlers with sexually explicit books,” the statement added. “That is why we have officially launched the Woke Heat Map — an interactive tool designed to expose the insane actions of the radical Left. This map will alert Missourians of craziness happening in their own communities.”

Maybe Georgia will get it done.  The House 1/6 group is doing a good job, though I'm not sure that will result in getting Trump off of our radar screen.  Even if the DOJ goes after Trump once that is over, I won't assume they will succeed, and if they do, let's see how the less honorable Republicans react.  Those disgusting dishonorable Congressional elected Republicans who opposed looking into 1/6 at all .... they are a very bad sign to me.

This week, the world's wealthiest person (and successful provider of alternative energy technology, as it happens) indicated he was leaning toward voting for Ron DeSantis in 2024 for President.  this is the same Ron DeSantis who has failed to repudiate the ongoing attempt to overthrow the rule of law in the US, by Trump.  This is the same Ron DeSantis who has been one of Trump's biggest supporters.

I think we (activists throughout the US) should generally spread the word that a basic criteria independent-minded thoughtful voters should be using is to not vote for any politicians who are willing to look the other way when it comes to the coup attempt.

Blake Masters Is Peter Thiel’s Dream Candidate—and a Total Nightmare for Democracy
The right-wing tech giant, who has said he believes freedom and democracy are incompatible, has poured millions into his protégé’s Senate campaign.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 … ark-kelly/

Arizona voters who want to comprehend just how unusual Masters is must understand the full pantheon of his influences. They include Curtis Yarvin, who describes himself as America’s foremost absolute monarchist blogger; Murray Rothbard, the reactionary economist who suggested libertarians use right-wing populism to push their agenda; and Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, whom Masters has praised (with caveats). Another favorite is Lee Kuan Yew, the late dictator of Singapore who oversaw a miraculous economic transformation while crushing the civil liberties of those who stood in the way.
But no one is as influential as Thiel, who confessed in a 2009 essay, “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.” He went on to warn that the “fate of our world may depend on the effort of a single person who builds or propagates the machinery of freedom that makes the world safe for capitalism.”
Thiel is setting himself up to be that builder. Masters is one of his tools.

He is spending tens of millions of dollars backing Masters, as well as Ohio Senate candidate JD Vance, another former employee. He is also putting smaller sums behind more than a dozen Republican candidates, most of whom question the results of the 2020 election. His goal is to bend the American right to his will.

How do we balance political expediency versus legal necessity? The law takes time, but Donald Trump is an imminent danger to American society right now. Something needs to be done, and we are running out of time.
At the end of the day, we have to follow the legal system and apply it evenhandedly — but that should be done as expeditiously as possible. The Justice Department has clearly come around to that understanding. They are now expanding their investigations of Jan. 6, Trump's other alleged crimes and related matters at the highest levels. I don't think it's going to take them very long to put together a case on the classified documents. And I don't think they have a choice, even if they wanted to resist prosecuting him. It's going to be sooner rather than later. Trump could easily be under both federal and state indictment at some point between Election Day [Nov. 8] and New Year's Day.

People on the left and right have come together to oppose Trump and his movement. I am hopeful that the American people will be so exhausted by this whole saga that they will be drawn toward all the things that tie us together as a nation and people. Of course we may disagree with one another, and do so passionately. But in the end we are all Americans, and we have more in common than divides us. I hope we can get back to that and heal after Trump.

New Evidence Shows How Trump Planned to Falsely Declare Victory and Steal the Election
“It was premeditated.”

The congressional committee investigating January 6 on Thursday revealed new evidence that Donald Trump had a preexisting plan to falsely declare victory on election night in 2020—part of a plot to use made-up voting fraud claims in an attempt to retain power.

For the second time, the committee played leaked audio first reported by Mother Jones in which Trump adviser Steve Bannon, during an October 31, 2020, meeting, said that Trump had a “strategy” to prematurely assert he had won on Election Day.

Republicans Want the Supreme Court to “Rewrite History” So They Can Hijack Elections
During the Moore v. Harper arguments, a majority of justices expressed skepticism about the radical “independent state legislature” theory.

A lawyer for the GOP-controlled North Carolina legislature argued before the Supreme Court on Wednesday that state legislatures should be granted sweeping new powers to pass gerrymandered maps and restrictive voting laws and cannot be constrained by state courts or state constitutions when it comes to regulating federal elections. This “independent state legislature” theory had long been considered fringe, but in recent years it has been aggressively pushed before the court by Federalist Society co-chairman Leonard Leo and his allied groups, the Trump campaign during its attempt to overturn the election in 2020, and now by Republican state lawmakers in North Carolina.

January 6 Report Presents a Devastating Case Against Trump
He was the “central cause” of the riot and mounted multiple plots to overthrow democracy.

After 18 months of investigation and hearings, the House January 6 committee has confirmed the obvious: “The central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, who many others followed. None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him.” The committee cited this conclusion in a 161-page introduction to its forthcoming final report that was released on Monday. The full report is expected to be made public on Wednesday.

Last week, the release of a legal filing in Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion defamation case against Fox News disclosed text messages, emails, and deposition testimony of Fox hosts and executives that provided a rare look at the inner workings of a propaganda outfit that masquerades as a news network.
