Washington Post Warns What Easing Texas COVID-19 Rules May Do To Rest Of The Country
GOP Gov. Greg Abbott is “gambling with the health of his state and beyond,” the newspaper's editorial board warned.

The Washington Post editorial board joined the growing chorus of criticism of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Tuesday after he announced the end of the state’s mask mandate and the relaxation of other restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus.
In a scathing editorial, the newspaper described the decision ― which comes as daily new infections plateau ― as “premature and reckless.”
Abbott was “gambling with the health of his state and beyond,” it said.

Biden Calls States Lifting Mask Mandates 'Neanderthal Thinking'
The president said easing COVID-19 restrictions in Texas, Mississippi and other states was a "big mistake" and emphasized the importance of masks.

Earlier this week, states including Texas, Michigan, Mississippi and Louisiana eased restrictions on masks as well as on indoor capacity in bars, restaurants and other businesses.
“I think it’s a big mistake,” Biden told a reporter in the Oval Office Wednesday.
“Look, I hope everyone’s realized by now that these masks make a difference. We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease,” he said, citing the acceleration in vaccination efforts around the country.

“Infodemiologists” Dive Into the Battle Against Vaccine Misinformation on Facebook
A pilot project trains young scientists to intervene in discussions and set the record straight.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 … -facebook/

The COVID-19 vaccine will not make you go blind or cause infertility. It does not contain a microchip or fetal tissue. It is not a Bill Gates scheme to get richer quick.
Those are some of the rumors that have spread like wildfire on social media in recent months. According to a report from the nonprofit coalition First Draft, which analyzed more than 14 million social-media posts mentioning vaccines or vaccination during a three-month period last year, two vaccine narratives have emerged: One narrative emphasizes safety concerns, and the other focuses on mistrust of the people and institutions involved in vaccine development.
Facebook and its subsidiary Instagram “drive vaccine discourse on social media,” including conspiracy-related content, First Draft reported. Facebook has taken some recent actions to try to stop the spread of vaccine misinformation on its platforms. But some independent researchers have decided to take matters into their own hands and are testing ways for “infodemiologists” to intervene directly on Facebook.

Dr. Anthony Fauci Delivers Stark Warning To Republicans Easing Coronavirus Restrictions
Texas and Mississippi dropped restrictions this week, a move Fauci called "ill-advised."

https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/ant … 794ae41459

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious diseases expert, has a warning for states that are dropping coronavirus restrictions as the number of cases continues to fall.
“It’s certainly from a public health standpoint ill-advised,” Fauci told CNN’s Erin Burnett, adding that past declines in the number of COVID-19 cases also prompted states to move too quickly to reopen.
And we know what happened next.
“We had rebounds which were very troublesome,” Fauci said. “What we don’t need right now is another surge.”

Florida’s agricultural commissioner has called on the FBI to launch an investigation into what she branded as Gov. Ron DeSantis’ system of “red carpet vaccine distribution” for wealthy GOP donors.
“The fact pattern is simply just too clear to avoid: Give campaign contribution, big dollars, get special access to vaccines — ahead of seniors, ahead of our teachers, ahead of our farmworkers, and so many of our residents here in the state of Florida,” said Commissioner Nikki Fried, the state’s highest-ranking elected Democrat, whose department also serves as Florida’s consumer watchdog.

The U.S. Has the Power to Tamp Down Coronavirus Variants — If We’re Willing to Use It
We’re in a race against mutations all around the world. The fastest way to speed vaccination is to let other countries manufacture the vaccines developed by Operation Warp Speed.

https://www.politico.com/news/agenda/20 … nts-471981

The emergence of new variants that could evade vaccine protection risks a prolonged pandemic here as well as elsewhere, because uncontrolled spread anywhere in the world allows the virus more opportunity to mutate and more dangerous variants to emerge and spread. The only way to reduce the risk of vaccine-escape mutations here is to increase vaccination and control measures everywhere.

A Stable One-Shot COVID Vaccine Is Deemed Safe and Effective

https://www.motherjones.com/coronavirus … effective/

Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot coronavirus vaccine is highly effective at preventing severe disease and death from COVID-19, the Food and Drug Administration found in analyses published today.
An international study found the vaccine’s efficacy rate to be 72 percent in the United States and 64 percent in South Africa, where a more contagious variant is spreading. While these figures are lower than Pfizer’s and Moderna’s efficacy rates, the vaccine greatly reduces the risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19 and could play a key role in keeping the pandemic at bay.

Donald Trump Is Still a Public Health Threat
More than 40 percent of Republicans say they won’t get the coronavirus vaccine. That’s largely on Trump.

Imagine being in a position to save tens of thousands of lives—perhaps hundreds of thousands—and not doing so? That’s one of the core questions that remain in the wake of the Trump presidency. The guy in charge could have prevented the deaths of so many Americans just by advocating and reaffirming basic public health guidances, such as mask-wearing, and he chose not to.
Last month, the Lancet Commission on Public Policy and Health in the Trump Era declared that about 40 percent of the nation’s COVID-19 deaths could have been averted had the United States taken these fundamental steps, and it offered a damning verdict: Donald Trump’s “inept and insufficient” response to the coronavirus crisis was partly to blame.

Rand Paul Won’t Stop Resisting Anthony Fauci’s COVID Guidance

https://www.motherjones.com/mojo-wire/2 … -guidance/

Paul repeatedly pressed Fauci on the utility of wearing masks given that prior infection and vaccination confer immunity to the coronavirus. But he didn’t seem to want to hear Fauci’s response about the possibility of reinfection by emerging, contagious COVID variants.

When Fauci again brought up the danger of variants against which vaccinated and previously infected people may not be immune, Paul accused him of “making policy based on conjecture.”
“You’ve been vaccinated and you parade around in two masks for show,” he said. “You want to get rid of vaccine hesitancy? Tell them they can quit wearing their masks after they get their vaccine.”
“I totally disagree with you,” Fauci said. “Let me just state, for the record, that masks are not theater. Masks are protective.”

Stricter COVID-19 Precautions Could Have Saved 240,000 Lives So Far, Economist Says

An early, stricter, more consistent approach to mask mandates, social distancing and testing protocols could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives that have been lost to COVID-19, a new research study concludes.
The death toll from COVID-19 could have been less than 300,000, estimated Andrew Atkeson, an economics professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. The toll is currently more than 540,000, and Atkeson projects a final number of about 670,000 — 370,000 more than would have been likely with more effective controls.

But officials are warning that cases are actually going back up, and things could get worse if we’re not careful. In fact, the United States is averaging roughly 57,000 new cases per day, a seven percent increase from the week before.

‘Yippee!’ Trump Officials Gloated After They Manipulated CDC Reports And Advice
House panel on COVID-19 accuses aides of “overruling and bullying scientists and making harmful decisions that allowed the virus to spread more rapidly.”

Donald Trump appointees with no experience in public health celebrated when they managed to wrangle changes in warnings and reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in order to underplay the danger of COVID-19, according to emails obtained by a House subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis.
“Yippee!!!” gushed Paul Alexander, science adviser to the Department of Health and Human Services, to HHS public affairs chief Michael Caputo after he pressured the CDC to modify warnings about coronavirus risks to young people, according to one of the emails.

Alexander also plotted with Dr. Scott Atlas, the controversial White House coronavirus adviser, to help him write an opinion article dismissing a CDC report on risks to young people as “timed for the election.” Alexander added in the email that the point of the op-ed would be to “blunt the edge” of the CDC report.
More than 560,000 Americans have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Trump’s COVID-19 task force leader, Dr. Deborah Birx, said last month that “hundreds of thousands” of those lives could have been saved had the Trump administration followed CDC advice and provided “consistent messaging” about social distancing, masks and business restrictions.
