Russian scientists claimed a world first after successfully testing a new full-size Pulse Detonation Engine (PDE) in Khimki on Friday. Footage release by the Fund of Perspective Research shows a video of the engine testing and firing using detonation waves to ignite the fuel and oxidizer. The shots were recorded by cameras set up inside the test lab of NPO Energomash, a major Russian rocket engine manufacturer.

The PDE is considered to be the next generation of engines that use environmental friendly fuel while being more effective than traditional jet engines. Its thermodynamic efficiency is higher than that of turbojets and turbofans and, theoretically, a PDE can operate from subsonic up to a hypersonic flight speeds.
