Teaching Students Environmental Building using the ST120 Green Construction Module from LJ Create

This Green Construction module from LJ Create ( http://LJCreate.com ) investigates the need to design and construct buildings using environmentally efficient methods and resources.

It also explores the potential for reducing energy consumption and evaluates alternative forms of energy production on a micro generation scale.

The module is centred around our unique ECO building.

The model building has been specifically designed to allow the teacher to demonstrate the practical applications of a number of micro scale power generation and heating systems.

The ECO building is intelligent and has its own electronic control and monitoring systems.

In addition to the activities based on the ECO building, the module also covers:
...green construction materials,
...forces on structures,
...and beam and bridge designs.

A series of dynamic software explorers allow students to investigate areas within green construction such as:
...energy use in a virtual house,
...designing and testing beams,
...and looking at how we can heat and cool buildings.

The ECO building is a focus for group demonstrations and team investigations.

Examples activities include:
...generating electricity using solar panels and a wind turbine,
...measuring the temperature gain of a fully working solar power water heating system,
...experimenting with how heat loss occurs in buildings and testing the effectiveness of insulation materials,
...comparing the efficiency of single and double glazing,
...and experimenting with a working model of an air-conditioning system.

Other activities in the module require students to evaluate environmental characteristics of materials used in construction.

They identify some examples of sustainable and recycled materials and how these are incorporated in modern construction.

Using a variety of modelling materials, students construct and test structures. Example models include:
...skyscrapers, to identify the importance of a central core,
...various beam structures, to compare strengths,
...and reinforced beams, to test their benefits.

Students face challenges that require them to draw on the knowledge and skills gained as they work through the curriculum.

For example, they are challenged to build a model conservatory for use with the ECO house, taking into account energy efficiency and structural strength.
The ready-made quality lessons supplied with this module help tutors introduce topics and allow students to go on and carry out investigations, independently and within teams.

The learning content is designed for flexible delivery from a PC, server system or internet connection. Its html format meets the requirements of the SCORM standard for access on a virtual learning platform. It includes continuous and summative assessment for automatically tracking and marking students' progress.

Theory presentations in PowerPoint, are used by tutors to introduce topics and cover key concepts.

When used with a student response system, automatic tracking of the integrated questions, and instant feedback, helps engage and excite the students. This also saves valuable tutor time with automatic marking and reporting.

Within the activities, students apply relevant scientific principles. They also perform mathematical calculations in the context of green construction technologies. This approach makes ST120 a great application for a STEM programme.
