Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors, will receive the 2014 Edison Award. Musk will be recognized for his contributions to human-centered design, as well as for inspiring other inventors, and creating emerging markets for new technologies.

He was one of the driving forces behind PayPal, Tesla Motors and Space X. Musk helped develop the Dragon spacecraft and Falcon family of rockets. Musk is currently one of the leading voices in developing a sustainable colony on Mars in the next two decades. He plans to put people on Mars around the same time NASA intends to go to the Moon for the first time in over 50 years.

Frank Bonafilia, Executive Director of the Edison Awards, said "Elon Musk is a true visionary of our time, and we could not be more honored to present him with the 2014 Edison Achievement Award. His intense desire to improve lives and make our world a better place through his abilities and accomplishments serve as living acknowledgment and embodiment of Thomas Edison's values and principles."

The ceremony will take place at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco. The event will be held on April 29th and 30th. The Edison awards are presented by Edison Universe, a non-profit company which has been sponsoring the recognition since 1987.

Inventions that have won the Edison Award in previous years include the world's first prosthetic hand with fingers that can be independently controlled. Anther winner of the award was the WorldWide Telescope, which allows anyone with a computer access to the best telescopes in, and above, the world.

Musk is a visionary, who has a passion for science that has inspired millions. One of his earlier projects was research into placing a greenhouse on Mars, to feed future astronauts, and create oxygen.

When looking back at the last 100 years of progress, he said "In 1969 we were able to go to the moon — in a sense, vicariously we all went there. If you asked almost anyone, 'What were some of the greatest things that happened in the 20th century?' I think they'd say, 'We landed on the moon.' That's frickin' awesome."
