EMERALD AWARD FINALIST – Government Institution Category (presented by ATCO): For more than a decade, the University of Calgary has demonstrated best practices in green building construction in 11 major buildings – occupying more than 1.7 million square feet – across the university campuses. The university has earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for seven projects, and four completed projects are currently pursuing certification. These 11 buildings represent one of the largest concentrations of green buildings on any post-secondary campus in Canada and serve as a catalyst for advancing green buildings in the province. Since launching the High Performance Green Building Program in 2005, the university has been using advanced technologies and innovative construction and design practices to significantly reduce energy and water consumption, reduce landfill waste and environmental impacts from material production, promote bio-diversity and protect waterways through on-site rain-water management strategies.
